Jonathan Adler

POTTER AND DESIGNER
Founder of Jonathan Adler

Jonathan Adler was at summer camp when he first took a seat at a potter’s wheel—and a lifelong passion was born. His widely influential, eponymous design brand — the star of which is his iconic pottery, plus furniture, lighting, bedding, and more—presents a world of synthesized palettes and motifs, exuberant pops of color, and irreverent twists on mid-century style. In 2022, he expanded his chain of retail stores to include an immersive Soho flagship called Atelier Adler. Beyond his own brand, he has served as Creative Director at toy company Fisher-Price and as a judge on Bravo’s Top Design. The author of three design books, he lives in New York with his husband Simon Doonan and their dog FoxyLady.

Décor you can dive into? It doesn’t get much better than that!
— Jonathan Adler, on what he loves most about coffee table books

At Booktique, we couldn’t love Jonathan Adler more. The man and his brand are one and the same: bright, bold, inspiring, and irrepressibly fun. Who better to judge the year’s best coffee table books than the creator of such decorative objets as the oversized Acrylic Pill or the Mohawk Lollipop Holder? Read on to see why Jonathan is Booktique’s forever muse.

What advice do you have for creatives who might wish to follow in your footsteps? Creativity is an elusive sprite that strikes where and when it wants to. I keep my eyes and my mind wide open.

What’s on your coffee table right now, book or otherwise? An artful array of our Acrylic Pills—and a less artful array of remotes and reading glasses.

What’s your favorite thing about coffee table books? Décor you can dive into? It doesn’t get much better than that!

At Booktique, we say “Read Beautifully” and we invite each person in our community to define it however they choose. What comes to mind when you think “Read Beautifully”? A place? A favorite person? A time of day? A color? A certain type of imagery? A specific book? Being at our place on Shelter Island, on a summer afternoon, with an iced tea in one hand, a book in the other and my shorter half Simon Doonan and our rescue mutt FoxyLady both underfoot. Perfection.

If you had to choose...

Words or pictures? Pictures. Matte or glossy? Glossy flossy! Serif or sans? Sans. Brights or greige? Brights. Marble or terrazzo? Marble. Music or silence? Country music. Sweet or savory? Savory. Coffee or cocktails? Neither. It's all tea, all the time. Movie theater or museum? Museum. Tulips or Bird of Paradise? Tulips. They're chic and classique. Grand Canyon or Central Park? Grand Canyon. Order or chaos? Chaos. It's all creative!
